RSVP Now: Reptiles & Rita’s! – May 14, 2022 at 1:00 pm

May 14 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

The Social Committee invites you to enjoy some Rita’s ice and a Reptile show on May 14 at the Gathering Green.

Get in line at 1 p.m. for complimentary Rita’s, to be ready for the 2 p.m. show!

Michael Shwedick will present beautiful reptiles as a part of “Reptiles & Rita’s” at the Gathering Green. Michael’s program will include a wonderful variety of reptiles from his private collection from the world over.

For 48 years Michael has introduced the world of reptiles for schools and colleges from Miami to Boston. With years that included 400 talks a year he has kept busy with his passion to teach about these fascinating and largely misunderstood creatures with the hopes of instilling a greater understanding of their importance in nature and our natural world.

His adventures with people have included some interesting guests. From the living room of Robert Kennedy’s home to sharing reptiles with Oprah!, chatting about them with John Ritter, Gloria Vanderbilt, Scatman Caruthers , Mighty Max Weinberg ( E Street Band ) Famous Amos, Richard Simmons (while he was exercising ) and special tortoise advisor to World Champion Braden Holtby has been unusual. When Lacoste opened their grand flagship store in Miami Michael was invited to attend and share several endangered species of crocodiles with guests . Lacoste has been a generous donor to crocodile conservation- who knew.

Presenting from University lecture halls, Uniformed Services School of Medicine (venomous snakes and snake bite ) Embassy of Spain, The National Theatre, Grossinger’s Resort and a boxing rink with Sugar Ray Leonard- unexpected .

In 1975 Michael was bitten by an adult asp, also known as the Egyptian cobra ( the same species Cleopatra it is said to have chosen ) and ended up in the hospital. Calling ahead to have extra anti-venin sent to the hospital before he left was a part of his protocol.

“I am only bitten when I make a careless mistake” and “I have learned a lot from mistakes and so have the doctors at Johns Hopkins”.

It will be a very special afternoon for all through the eyes and hands of Michael Shwedick.
